🚦 Why Choose Backwoods Racing?
Tracing confusing factory wiring diagrams is a nightmare that easily leads to limp mode or fried electronics.
Our professional conversion service completely transforms your bulky donor car harness into an ultra-simplified, 2-wire hookup system.
What We Do:
Strip & Clean: We completely strip down your oily factory harness.
De-pin the Clutter: We remove every unneeded wire, including the factory BCM, ABS, and airbags.
Streamline the System: We strip out old fuse panels and bulky sub-circuits, leaving you with an ultra-clean, minimal harness layout.
📦 What We Need From You (Shipment Checklist)
To convert your harness, you must box up and ship us the following specific components from your donor car:
Your Complete Engine Harness: Must be in good physical condition with no cut wiring and no broken connectors. We cannot accept or convert damaged harnesses.
The Connectors: You must include all 3 main harness connectors—this means 2 connectors for the ECM and 1 connector for the TCM (unless your car has a manual transmission).
The Complete Throttle Pedal Wiring: You must ship the connector, and the pedal wiring. Keeping your specific pedal paired with your throttle body prevents pedal calibration issues.
📬 Shipping Address for Your Harness
Please securely box up your parts and mail them directly to our shop:
12040 Dunn Rd
Riley, MI 48041
We recommend using a shipping service with tracking (such as UPS, FedEx, or USPS Priority Mail) so you can monitor your package.
⏳ Turnaround Time
7-14 Days After Receiving: Once your harness arrives at our shop, it typically takes 7 to 14 business days to build, test, and ship your completed standalone harness back out.
One-Man Operation: Backwoods Racing is a dedicated one-man show. This ensures that every single harness gets the absolute highest attention to detail, quality control, and care—though high order volumes can occasionally affect timing. We appreciate your patience as we build it right.
⚠️ Important Swap Details & Limitations
Before sending us your harness, please keep these operational factors in mind:
US Shipping Only: We are sorry, but we only accept orders and ship completed harnesses within the United States. We cannot accept international orders at this time.
No Cut or Broken Components: To ensure the safety and reliability of your swap, we do not work on harnesses with cut wiring or broken plastic locking clips/connectors.
No Electric Steering: The factory electric power steering (EPS) relies on data signals from the body control module (BCM). Since the BCM is deleted for standalone use, your factory electric steering will not function. You will need to plan for manual steering or a hydraulic conversion..
🔌 The Ultimate Simplified 2-Wire Hookup
When your converted harness arrives back, it only requires two basic wire connections from the harness to make the engine run:
Switched Power (Keyed 12V+): Turns on the ECM and fuel system when the key is on.
Ground: Connects to your chassis or engine block.
🔋 Your Responsibilities for the Swap
Because we build the engine harness as a direct standalone unit, you will be responsible for wiring the following vehicle-side components:
Main Battery Power & Grounds: From the engine directly to the battery.
Fuel Pump & Cooling Fans: Hooked up via your own independent relays.
🔧 Common Ecotec Swap Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing issues after dropping the engine into your project car, check these common E37 Ecotec swap problems:
The Engine Cranks But Won't Start (No Spark/Fuel):
The Ground Issue: The most common swap failure is a bad ground. You must run a heavy-gauge ground cable directly from the engine block to the battery negative terminal. A thin braided strap to the chassis frame is not enough to ground the Ecotec's sensitive ECM circuits.
VATS is Active: If the engine starts for exactly 2 seconds and dies, your ECM still has the factory GM Vehicle Anti-Theft System enabled. You will need a VATS delete tune to disable it.
Engine Goes Directly into Limp Mode / Reduced Engine Power:
Pedal/Throttle Body Mismatch: Ensure you are using the exact gas pedal that came out of the donor car with that harness. Swapping in a different DBW pedal can trigger electronic throttle body correlation codes, immediately cutting your power.
Crank but No Spark / Camshaft Codes:
Slipped Cam Reluctor: 2.4L Ecotec motors occasionally suffer from a slipped exhaust cam reluctor wheel. It causes a no-start condition even if your wiring, fuses, and sensors are perfectly fine.
